SAN FRANCISCO -- Michael Morse looked baffled after missing wildly on a wicked curve from Minnesota starter Ricky Nolasco in the fifth inning. It was one of the few pitches the Giants slugger guessed wrong on, and the last one from Nolasco he let get by. Morse hit a bases-loaded double on Nolascos next offering -- one of three doubles by San Franciscos first baseman -- helping the Giants to an 8-1 win over the Twins on Sunday that completed a three-game sweep. The crowd at AT&T Park gave Morse a loud ovation after the hit when his face was shown on the giant scoreboard in centerfield. "Moments like that make you feel so humble and happy that youre here," said Morse, who signed a one-year deal with San Francisco in the off-season. "Every day feels like the playoffs here. Its awesome." Madison Bumgarner pitched seven innings to remain unbeaten in May, Gregor Blanco had three hits while filling in for leadoff man Angel Pagan and Hunter Pence homered for the Giants, who improved to 6-0 in interleague games this year and improved their majors-leading record to 32-18. Bumgarner (6-3) earned his fourth straight win while relying mainly on his fastball and slider to baffle the slumping Twins. He struck out 10 with no walks and allowed only two runners past second base. "Madison was Madison," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had his normal stuff and pitched great." It was a far different result than Bumgarner got in his only other appearance against Minnesota in 2011 when the left-hander was knocked out of the game after retiring one batter. This time around, the left-hander was dominant. Bumgarner fanned Joe Mauer three times, recorded six consecutive strikeouts during one stretch and struck out the side in the fifth after getting called for a balk. Its just the fifth time in Mauers career that hes struck out three times against the same pitcher. George Kontos pitched the final two innings for San Francisco, which has won seven straight games against American League teams dating to 2013. "I for sure didnt forget about that," said Bumgarner, who reached double digits in strikeouts for the 15th time in his career. "There wasnt a whole lot of talk about it but its something thats tough to forget, to go through a start like that one." Eduardo Escobar singled and scored Minnesotas only run in the third. "I dont think we had a hit with runners in scoring position and that never bodes well," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Well try to find a way to get hits in the right places and win some ballgames." The Giants jumped on Twins starter Ricky Nolasco (2-5) early with a pair of bloop singles in the first and a run-scoring hit by Pablo Sandoval that left fielder Eduardo Nunez got a late jump on. Morses sacrifice fly made it 2-0. Pences home run in the bottom of the third gave the Giants a 3-1 lead. It was Pences sixth home run of the season and his fifth career shot off Nolasco. Morse doubled and scored in the fourth to snap a 2-for-14 slump and make it 4-1, then broke the game open with his bases-clearing hit in the fifth. San Franciscos power-hitting first baseman smiled and pumped his fist while standing on second base as the crowd at AT&T Park gave him a roaring standing ovation. That chased Nolasco, who had won in four of his six previous starts at the Giants waterfront ballpark. He allowed nine hits over 4 2-3 innings, struck out three and walked one. Minnesota scored its lone run in the third on back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly from Brian Dozier. The Twins, who were outscored 16-4 in the series, managed just three baserunners over the final six innings and were swept for the third time this season. Mauer snapped his skid with a single off Kontos in the ninth but was replaced by a pinch-runner. NOTES: Minnesota announced plans to activate Josh Willingham off the disabled list Monday after the veteran outfielder missed 41 games with a fractured left wrist. They find themselves trying to knock each other out in the Western Conference finals for the second straight year. The Blackhawks prevailed last year on their way to the Stanley Cup, and they have the early lead this time after taking the opener, 3-1.Gary Neville says he is surprised if Jose Mourinho has criticised Chris Smalling, but thinks Luke Shaw needs to mature at Manchester United. Mourinho appeared to be critical of Smalling and Shaw when he said after the 3-1 win over Swansea on Sunday that he only wants players who are willing to put their bodies on the line. Both Smalling and Shaw were left out of the squad for the match due to not being 100 per cent. Former Manchester United defender Neville worked with Smalling for several years while he was assistant manager with England.I find it difficult to believe he has ever been anything other than completely committed to wanting to get out on the training pitch every day, said the Sky Sports pundit at the Red Bull Street Style event, where he was a judge. So I am not quite sure what Jose has seen, but he is the manager of the club and has to make the calls he sees fit. Skys James Cooper has the latest on how Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is dealing with Luke Shaw Having worked with him for four years he has always been incredibly impeccable and trust worthy, someone I always felt would run through a brick wall, so I am surprised by that one.Shaw joined United in 2014 from Southampton but has only returned to the first team this season after breaking his leg last September.I think Luke is a more complex character, said Neville. Andy Walker & Ray Wilkins discuss Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling’s future at Manchester United Jose Mourinho wont either because it will be him or the players that are going to survive and he doesnt work on the theory it will be the players.Jose is looking to make his name at Manchester United and he has to make sure he has the players alongside him he wants.Former Celtic striker Andy Walker told Sky Sports News HQ that he thinks Mourinho is trying to force Smalling and Shaw out of the club. But Neville said: As a manager you pick the players who are available to play and trust in them. They were very strong comments, he sees things on the inside and, having being part of coaching teams in the last three or four years, when you see things you are not happy with, its not always apparent to the public on the outside. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Acquiring a quarterback — and maybe two — tops the Buffalo Bills off-season to-do list after the team was stunned by quarterback Kyle Orton announcing his intention to retire Monday.Right now, its still trying to process it, general manager Doug Whaley said. We had no inclination that he was thinking to make that decision at this time or down the road. So it was surprising. The 32-year-old caught the team off guard when he informed coach Doug Marrone of his plans shortly before the Bills held their end-of-season meetings. The revelation came a day after the 10-year journeyman led Buffalo (9-7) to a season-ending 17-9 win at New England.Despite enjoying its first winning season since a 9-7 finish in 2004, Buffalo missed the playoffs to extend the NFLs longest active post-season drought to 15 years. Its just a family decision, Orton said, in a statement released by the team. Ive decided to get home and be a dad and call it a day.Orton declined to speak to reporters while making a brief appearance at his locker, where he picked up a few of his belongings, including a money clip.By electing to retire, Orton passes up a chance to make a $5.4 million base salary he was due next year after making $2.5 million this season.I cant be disappointed with a guy that says his hearts not in it, Whaley said. I respect his decision. I respect what he brought to our team this year. And we wish him nothing but the best.Orton was already contemplating retirement in mid-July when he was cut by the Dallas Cowboys after failing to attend the teams spring minicamps. The Bills signed him to a two-year contract with a little more than a week before the start of the season.Initially brought in to mentor EJ Manuel, Orton wound up replacing the second-year player after a 2-2 start.Orton provided an initial spark in going 3-1 in his first four starts before he and the offence sputtered down the stretch. He finished 7-5 with 3,018 yards passing with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.Minus Orton, the Bills are left with two quarterbacks, Manuel and Jeff Tuel, who spent the entire season on the practice squad.Manuel has two years left on his contract. The 2013 first-round picks future as the teams long-term starter, however, remains in question after he was benched.Without making any commitments, Whaley and Marrone said Manuel will be given an opportunity to reclaim the starting job next season. It wont happen without competition with Whaley saying he intends to add potentially two quarterbacks this off-season.Getting a quarterback through free agency or trade is a more likely option. The Bills dealt their first-round draft pick to Cleveland for the right to move up five spots and select receiver Sammy Watkins fourth overall.Ortons addition was a stop-gap measure. And yet the Bills were looking forward to seeing the benefit Orton would get by having an entire off-season to better learn the offensive system.Marrone was so surprised by Ortons decision that he initially asked the quarterback to reconsider.Had Marrone known about Ortons plans, the coach would have reconsidered his decision to start the veteran over Manuel in the finale with the Bills already eliminated from playoff contention.Receiver Robert Woods said Orton had hinted at the possibility of retiring in recent weeks.Hed talk about it here and there, just joking around, Its my last get-around, guys, Woods said. I gained a lot of knowledge from him. Im happy for him. Were thankful for him. With a 42-40 record as a starter, Orton was Chicagos fourth-round pick in 2005, and also played in Denver and Kansas City.Quarterback shuffles are nothing new in Buffalo. The Bills havent had a starter last beyond three years since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly retired following the 1996 season. Including Orton, the Bills have now had 11 quarterbacks start at least eight games over the past 18 seasons.NOTES: Tuel was one of 10 players the Bills signed to reserve/future contracts on Monday. Also signed were WRs Caleb Holley and Tobais Palmer, DLs Bryan Johnson and Jeremy Towns, OLs William Campbell and D.J. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Rex Ryan and Michael Vick might need to huddle up. While Ryan insisted Wednesday theres "no doubt" the New York Jets have an open competition at quarterback, Vick continued to differ. So, heres where we are: Its a controversy over a competition that could become a controversy at some point in training camp. "I think there is competition, theres no doubt," Ryan said after the Jets completed the second day of organized team activities. "As a coach, you love it." But, shortly after Ryans news conference, Vick reiterated his comments from last week, and has said since he signed with New York in March, that Geno Smith is the teams starting quarterback. "Nah," Vick said. "Its not an open competition." Ryan and general manager John Idzik have preached competition at all positions. While Ryan acknowledged that some competition has to be "manufactured" -- for instance, centre Nick Mangold, left tackle DBrickashaw Ferguson and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson are in no danger of losing their jobs -- players pushing each other on the field improves everyone. That was the thought when the Jets signed Vick in March; he would give Smith a serious run for the job. But last week, Vick made it clear he thinks this is Smiths job to lose and its not an open competition, at least not like last year when he and Nick Foles went against each other in Philadelphia. "Weve got two guys who are really pushing to be the starting quarterback," Ryan said, when asked about Vicks comments from last week. Vick and Smith split snaps with the starting offence Wednesday. "Ive said from Day 1 that I think Geno will be hard to beat out," Ryan said. "But Ive also said Mike will have an opportunity to compete, and he definitely will." The coach added he didnt know why Vick thinks its not a true competition, but was noncommittal when asked if Vick could be the starter if he outperforms Smith in camp. "I think well let it play out a little bit," Ryan said. "Its the second day of OTAs, so its not a closed competition." Thats news to Vick, though. He at first danced around questions regarding the quarterback situation and Ryans comments. "Im here to compete every day to help this team win football games," Vick said, later repeating that line a few times before appearing to grow frustrated. "I dont know how to answer this question," Vick said. "This is the third time around." Smith, who has repeatedly said hes taking nothing for granted, was not made available to the media. Vick doesnt appear disgruntled about his situation, and hasnt indicated he was misled when he signed a one-year, $4 million deal and was reunited with offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinweg. "I knew what I was getting into when I got here," he said. "Its everything I expected. Im having fun with the guys. Everything is team oriented. Were just having a good time. We just have to keep everything rolling. Thats the most important thing." One things for sure: Whoever wins the job will have a proven receiver in Eric Decker to throw to. But the former Broncos star is going from Peyton Manning to an unsettled quarterback situation. Arguably the top wide receiver available when free agency opened, Decker visited the Jets first and never left. Now, hes expected to give New York a No. 1-type target. "Ive been telling people I feel like a rookie all over again, which is nice," Decker said. "Ive got to prove myself, in a way." Decker broke out in a big way the last two seasons, catching a combined 172 passes for 2,352 yards and 24 touchdowns. "The two years I got to spend with (Manning), he made me a better professional," Decker said. "But, again, I see a lot of talent in this quarterback room, and Im excited about growing with them." NOTES: S Calvin Pryor, the teams first-round pick, sat out because he needs three wisdom teeth pulled and his mouth is swollen. "I cant put my helmet on," he said. "So (the trainers) dont want me out there with contact right now." He expects to practice next week. ... RB Chris Johnson caused a stir Tuesday night when he tweeted that the Jets should pursue disgruntled Texans WR Andre Johnson. "Anytime youve got another friend in the league, you always want to play with him," Chris Johnson said. ... WRs David Nelson (illness) and Shaq Evans (finishing school) and RB Mike Goodson (knee) were among those not at the voluntary sessions Wednesday. ... The Jets signed CB Brandon Dixon, a sixth-round pick, to a four-year deal. That leaves Pryor and CB Dexter McDougle, a third-rounder, as the only unsigned players of the Jets 12 selections. DETROIT -- On a day full of bad news on the injury front, at least the Texas Rangers could enjoy a victory. Shin-Soo Choo homered, Chris Gimenez had four hits and the Rangers rolled to a 9-2 victory over the slumping Detroit Tigers on Thursday. This was supposed to be Prince Fielders first game back in Detroit after the Tigers traded him in the off-season, but the big first baseman didnt make the trip because of a herniated disk in his neck that could keep him out the rest of the season. Fielder is expected to have surgery Tuesday. General manager Jon Daniels announced that after the game. Manager Ron Washington had already finished talking to reporters by then. "You just want to go out there and give yourself a chance, hope your pitching staff gives you a chance," Washington said. "We understand not every day were going to be able to put nine runs up, especially against this team." Yu Darvish (4-2) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking three. The Rangers broke through quickly against Detroit rookie Robbie Ray (1-1), who lasted only 3 1-3 innings. Ray allowed seven runs, nine hits and four walks, and the AL Central-leading Tigers lost their fourth straight. Ian Kinsler, who was traded to Detroit for Fielder in an off-season blockbuster, went 1 for 3 in his first game against the Rangers. The Tigers breezed to a 27-12 start before being swept in a three-game series at Cleveland. Star right-handers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer were both knocked around in that series, and a 13-inning finale against the Indians taxed the bullpen. Rays start Thursday made the situation even worse, and infielder Danny Worth ended up pitching the ninth inning for Detroit. Worth, throwing a knuckleball, actually struck out two in a scoreless frame. "That was a lot of fun," Worth said. "Obviously, you dont ever want to be needed in that spot, but once I got out there, I enjoyed it." Alex Rios opened the scoring with an RBI double off Ray in the second, and Gimenez drove him home with a single. Adrian Beltre added a two-run double the following inning and later scored to make it 5-0. In half of Darvishs first eight starts, the Rangers failed to provide a single run of support. That wasnt a problem Thursday. Choos two-run homer in the fourth chased Ray, and Michael Choices two-run single later that inning gave the Rangers a nine-run lead. Gimenez had never even had a three-hit game before Thursday. Not only did he contribute offensively, but he also had little trouble behind the plate. It was his first time catching Darvish and his tricky array of pitches. "He let me do whatever I wanted to do," Darvish said through a translator. "So I felt really good." Texas has won back-to-back games for only the second time this month, but the Rangers injury woes remain a major concern. It looks like they will be without Fielder for a while, and in the third inning, centre fielder Daniel Robertson hurt himself in an outfield collision. Robertson came diving in headfirst to try to make a catch, at the same time Rios came sliding in from right. Replays showed a wad of gum popping out of Robertsons mouth when the two players collided. X-ray and concussion tests were negative. "Its a hard play, its a hustle play," Robertson said. "If we were to do it 10 times again, Id make the same play." The Tigers lead second-place Minnesota by 4 1/2 games in the division, but theyve allowed 31 runs in their past four games, an uncharacteristic spell for what might be baseballs best starting rotation. Detroits starters have allowed 19 earned runs over a three-game span, the first time thats happened since May 24-27, 2011, according to STATS. The last time a position player pitched for the Tigers was also in 2011, when Don Kelly did it. NOTES: Detroits extra-inning loss to Cleveland on Wednesday took 5 hours, 16 minutes. This UFC Fight Night promises to be an action filled card. Live from Chicago, the action is set to get under at 4:30 ET. Benson Henderson is in his first contest back in the octagon since he lost his lightweight title to Anthony Pettis. That means hell be doing everything to secure his number-one ranking. His opponent, Josh Thomson will be looking to take that spot and move himself into the title picture. The rest of the main event and a few of the prelims are absolute barn burners. Watch for Donald Cerrone, and Jeremy Stephens to really put it on the line. They need convincing wins to get back into the UFCs spotlight. Tune in Saturday morning at 11:30 ct/12:30 et to TSN Radio 1290 as myself (Jordan Cieciwa), Big Marv, and Toby "the rookie" take over the air ways to break down the fights and all the latest MMA news. Benson Henderson (19-3-0) vs. Josh Thomson (20-5-0) Jordan Cieciwa Couldnt have asked for a better fight than this on a Saturday night. You have an elusive and athletic, number-one ranked competitor with the drive to get his belt back facing a very talented and well-rounded fighter out of the American Kickboxing Academy. You know both fighters will be prepared. Its also a five round affair which provides lots of time for these two fighters to settle the matter. However, with the skill level of these athletes, I see this going the distance. In my mind that favors the former champ. Look for Henderson to outscore Josh Thompson with takedowns and a lot more movement and single scoring blows. Henderson via unanimous decision Big Marv I think this will be a great fight. "The Punk" looked great against Diaz, but I think Bendo is stronger and faster. I see another grinded out decision win for the former champ. Henderson via unanimous decision Toby This is probably the hardest pick of the night. Both fighters are well-rounded and have great conditioning. Thomson looked outstanding against Diaz and was the first person in the UFC to stop him via TKO. Henderson is looking to get another shot at Pettis as soon as possible and a win over Thomson will most likely get him there. I expect Thomson to keep it to the outside and try to get the better of the striking but I believe Henderson is the better wrestler and will grind this one out if hes not doing what he wants on the feet. Henderson wins by decision. Gabriel Gonzaga (16-7-0) vs. Stipe Miocic (10-1-0) JC What can you say about Gabriel Gonzaga? We all remember the kick heard round the world. His flash knock out of Mirko "Cro Cop" was absolutely epic and had people knowing his name immediately. He has followed that up with some very impressive first round knockouts, unfortunately, also with a few inopportune ones where he himself got KOd. Stipe Miocic has been turning heads as well. He is very heavy handed, and other than a loss in a solid fight with Stefan Struve, his heavy hand gets raised at the end of fights. This is a battle of two heavyweight strikers and that usually means knockout of the night. I for one cant wait to see the results from this one and this is my pick for the potential fight of the night. Both athletes are hungry, they both know how to put on a show and they both have the talent to make this memorable. I expect this will end with Gonzaga staggering Miocic and securing a submission. Gabriel Gonzaga via second round submission. BM I have to give it to Gonzaga, he has really come back. After his loss to Travis Browne, I thought he was washed up. I also thought Stipe Miocic didnt stand a chance against Roy Nelson at UFC 161, but I sat there cage side and saw him use Nelson as his personal punching bag for three rounds. Hard to pick, but I say the younger Miocic takes this one Stipe Miocic via TKO round two Toby This has the potential of fight of the night! Gabriel Gonzaga has been around a while and has seen some outstanding competition and had been on a tear lately. Stipe Miocic looked especially great against Roy Nelson and I believe his hands will be the difference in this fight. Its hard to pick against someone with a submission game like Gonzaga brings to the table and he also "Cro Copped" "Cro Cop". Stipe Miocic via TKO Donald Cerrone (21-6-0) vs. Adriano Martins (25-6-0) JC Donald Cerrone has seen all the top contenders in the UFC and in the WEC. He knows his way around the cage and nerves wont be a problem at all. The UFC is his home. The only question is which Cowboy comes to fight? He has lackluster nights and then he has nights full of spring in his step and some of the best kickboxing in MMA. Adriano Martins has the exact opposite problem. He looks sharp, but he has yet to get into the cage with a real MMA star. He gets to change that with Cerrone. Martins wont get the easy first round KO with Cerrone and its difficult to submit the Cowboy. If Donald Cerrone wants to keep getting those phone calls from the UFC, he needs to string a few wins together. That means we potentially get to see a fired up and focused Donald Cerrone. If thats the case, its going to be a lot of leg kicks and elbows for Adriano Martins. I expect we will get to see Cerrones traditional kickboxing come through in this one. Hell stay a safe distance away from Martins hands, and win a much deserved decision. Donald Cerrone via unanimous decision BM When theres no big fight stipulations or titles on the line, Cerrone is MONEY. Look for Cowboy to end this quick. Late round one TKO Cerrone via TKO round 1 Toby This IS my pick for Fight of the Night, this is a real test for Adriano Martins and Im sure hes going to be working his leg kicks for this one. Ill say it now, Donald Cerrone is one of my favorite fighters and I love his aggressive stand up style and his ability to pick most people apart. This is the fight Im expecting some fireworks and I believe Adriano is ready for the challenge but I think "Cowboy" has been in there with too many top level guys to get beat this time. Donald Cerrone …tough call… Ill say TKO The rest of the night is just as impressive as the three main fights. "Hes done a tremendous job for us and (Wednesday) was no different." Logan Morrison drove in two runs in Seattles big sixth inning, Young pitched seven strong innings and the Mariners beat the Houston Astros 5-2 to complete a three-game sweep.BOSTON -- Golden State didnt need another winning, last-second basket this time. The Warriors led by at least 20 points throughout the second half and beat the Boston Celtics 108-88 on Wednesday night, showing no letdown one day after edging the Indiana Pacers on a field goal with 0.6 seconds left. Klay Thompson hit that 12-foot turnaround to beat one of the NBAs best teams, 98-96. Against one of the worst, Thompson and David Lee scored 18 points each as the Warriors ended their road trip with a 4-2 record. "This win validates last night," Thompson said. The Warriors were determined not to ease up against much weaker competition than they faced at Indiana, which has the leagues best home record. "It was big for us," Lee said. "The starters really wanted to come out and set the tone tonight and not give the Celtics team any life." That plan worked. The Warriors scored the first six points and led 12-2 with just over five minutes gone as they moved a season-high 14 games over .500 with a 38-24 record. "I read where if we lost this game then that takes away (Tuesdays win). You cannot forget how tough it is to win games in this league," Golden State coach Mark Jackson said. "Fortunately, we did not fall in love with what we did in Indy." The Celtics (20-41) provided little resistance and lost for the seventh time in eight games. "It was a struggle for us," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "Id like to find something that I could say we were better in, but there wasnt anything." Former Celtic Jordan Crawford had 15 points and Stephen Curry added 14 for the Warriors, who won for the seventh time in nine games. Kelly Olynyk scored 19 points for Boston. "We dont want to keep embarrassing ourselves and that is the mentality we are going to have," Jeff Green said. Lee started the scoring with an 18-footer and Andre Iguodala ffollowed with a layup and a dunk for a 6-0 lead.dddddddddddd Jerryd Bayless then hit a fadeaway jumper for Boston, but Golden State got the next six points on dunks by Curry and Thompson and a layup by Lee. The game was still competitive when Bayless two free throws cut Golden States lead to 42-33 with 5:55 left in the first half. Then Thompsons 3-pointer began a 19-7 run that gave the Warriors a 61-40 lead at halftime. Baskets by Lee and Andrew Bogut made it 49-33 before Rajon Rondo sank a free throw and Jared Sullinger made two for Boston. But then Golden State scored the next six points on a short jumper by Lee, a dunk by Iguodala and a 16-footer by Curry. A 3-pointer by Green cut the margin to 55-38, but Curry followed with a 3-point play. Rondo answered with a layup before Iguodala finished the first-half scoring with a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. The sloppy Celtics committed 12 turnovers in the first half, leading to 15 points, while the Warriors turned the ball over just twice, leading to two points. "What hurt us more than maybe anything were the turnovers in the first half that led to the dunks that got those guys going," Stevens said. "I didnt think our effort was great." The Warriors took their biggest lead, 31 points, when two straight baskets by Thompson made it 80-49 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. "Theyre hitting their stride a little bit," Stevens said. Now the Warriors head home for 13 of their remaining 20 games. "We took care of business on the road," Lee said. "Our thought is we shouldnt lose any more games at home." NOTES: Golden State has 20 road wins, tied with Oklahoma City for second most in the NBA. ... Jackson rested his starters in the fourth quarter. ... Rondo had 14 points and seven assists, but also had seven turnovers. ... Lee had a game-high 10 rebounds, while Bogut blocked three shots. GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Its easy to spot Clay Matthews at Packers practice, with his long blond hair protruding from his helmet and on to his neck and shoulders. When the veterans are getting a break, the pass-rushing outside linebacker can often be found taking a breather next to A.J. Hawk, the durable inside linebacker. After some doubt, theyll be together again this weekend to face the Detroit Lions. The Packers bye week did wonders for Matthews and his sore hamstring. "Well I mean we obviously had the bye week, which helped out as far as" getting healthy, Matthews said Thursday. "It was a fortuitous bye week, Ill say that." The TV commercial star and the eight-year veteran. The energized Matthews, in his fifth season, and the well-spoken, blue-collar Hawk. Mainstays of the Packers starting linebacking corps since 2009. So many games against NFC North foes like the Lions, it must make playing them seem like second nature. Wrong, said Hawk. Especially with Reggie Bush in the mix now in Detroit to join receiver Calvin Johnson to give opposing defences headaches. "And the truth is, Ive been part of a lot of games like that. You go in with all these things that you think are 100 per cent, and they can change in division games," Hawk said. "I need these days leading up to every game. I need every rep I can get because were working on so many different looks and so many different things." Sounds like sage comments a grizzled veteran would say. Hawk agreed to a pay cut in the off-season, not worried about outside perception of the deal. Hawk has also taken heat from fans about perhaps being a step slow, or not making enough big plays. But he does make tackles -- 28 this year, second behind Brad Jones, and a team-high 145 last season. Hes also durable, having played in 123 of a possible 125 games while in Green Bay. Its all in the preparation, Hawk said, at least until Sunday. "I have little tips in the back of my head that Ive written down all week," he said. "But I know once Im out there, we just need to run around and make plays." Which is exactly what Matthews is known for, becoming one of the leagues most popular defensive players. His No. 52 jerseys might be outnumbered in the Lambeau Field stands only by the No. 12 jerseys for Aaron Rodgers among current players. When hes on the field, Matthews fires up the crowd and his teammates. When hes on the sideline with a hamstring injury, like when he was knocked out of the Bengals game two weeks ago, it gives the green-and-gold fans a scare. Matthews missed four games last season with a hamstring problem. He quickly reminded reporters Thursday that when he returned, Dec. 16 at Chicago, he had two sacks. "The first part of getting over a hamstring strain is healing, and obviously I cant control that," Matthews said. "But coming back, the final hurdle you have to overcome is mentally are you comfortable with exerting 100 per cent effort or even more so. I wouldnt put myself out there if I wasnt." In his fifth season in the league, Matthews still possesses the wide-eyed eagerness of a rookie. But that experience is building up in his brain, beneath those trademark locks, especially when it comes to dealing with his hamstring. Matthews was playing well with two forced fumbles and a sack against Cincinnati before departing. It was a joint decision with medical staff and coaches. "I just told them where I was at and how I felt and moving forward what the smart thing would be," Matthews said. "At that point in the game, with that lead, too, I felt like it was the wise decision." The Packers went on to cough up their 16-point lead. But its a long season. After the early bye, the Packers will have to play 13 straight weeks. "I think Ive become a lot smarter. Obviously a younger player would have kind have pressed the issue, maybe hurt himself even more so," Matthews said. "But I think were smart with the events that took place in Cincinnati and where were at now, so fortunately there will be no time missed." Nike Air Max Pas Cher . Fourteen words to be exact. "Disappointed. I dont agree with it. It is what it is and move on," Dempsey said after the Seattle Sounders wrapped practice on Thursday. The real concern for some is that the suspension came right before a major U.S. national team exhibition against Mexico next Wednesday. By the time Dempsey takes the field against Mexico in Glendale, Ariz., it will have been more than two weeks since Dempsey last played. And while its just an exhibition, its significant because it will be the last U.S. match before World Cup camp begins in May. "Its a friendly, its not a World Cup qualifier so theres not much pressure that there would be if it was a World Cup qualifying game," Dempsey said. "But its still exciting to represent your country and to play against one of your rivals." Dempsey was suspended and fined for violent conduct toward Toronto FC defender Mark Bloom in a March 15 match. Dempsey hit Bloom in the stomach/groin area, a blow not seen by officials but that was captured by television cameras. Dempsey said after the match that he was trying to slap Blooms hand off his back and did not intend to strike his body. The MLS players union appealed but the suspension was upheld. Dempsey sat last week when Seattle won at Montreal and will be a spectator Saturday when the Sounders host Columbus. Hell return to MLS play on April 5 when Seattle travels to rival Portland. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann was one of Dempseys most vocal supporters afteer the suspension was announced.dddddddddddd He was quick to point out the number of fouls Dempsey has taken since returning to MLS. "Its very disappointing to see Clint be the only person punished from this game," Klinsmann said last week. "There is a foul against him in the sixth minute that should have been a red card. The persistent fouling continued throughout the game, and hes getting punished for a reaction following all those fouls. Yes he made a mistake, but if opponents dont get penalized for consistently fouling, it only encourages them to continue that approach." According to stats provided by MLS, Dempsey is the most fouled player in the league since Aug. 10 of last season. Dempsey, the U.S. captain, appreciated Klinsmanns concern. "Yeah, for sure its always good that the manager has your back and I appreciate that," Dempsey said. "All I can do is keep working hard and keep working on my fitness after training and making sure I play well when Im with the national team, like I have always done in the past. And make sure I keep playing good with the national team moving forward and pay him back for his faith in me." Dempsey said one solution to the fouls would be for more yellow cards to be handed out earlier in the match. He believes that could create a better rhythm to the game. "I think its important to protect every player," Dempsey said. "The sooner you start giving the cards for reckless fouls then it cuts down on a lot of things and it makes the game more exciting to watch because there is more free flow to it." ' ' '

TORONTO -- Kelli Stack had a goal and two assists as the United States edged Canada 3-2 on Monday night. The win was the Americans third straight and fourth in the six game exhibition series against the Canadians. It was the final match-up between the two womens hockey powers ahead of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Canada has lost two consecutive games to the U.S. under the guidance of newly appointed head coach, Kevin Dineen. He took over on Dec. 17 after Dan Church resigned. Stack, Hilary Knight and Megan Bozek all scored as the Americans opened up a 3-0 lead in the second period much to the disappointment of the announced crowd of 17, 227 at the Air Canada Centre. Natalie Spooner got Canada on the board with 34 seconds left in the middle periods. Canadas Brianne Jenner cut the U.S. lead to 3-2 with a short-handed goal at 1:57 of the third. Despite out-shooting the Americans 9-5 in the third period, Canada could not find the equalizer. Canadian starter Genevieve Lacasse made 27 saves in the loss while Molly Schaus stopped 25 shots for the U.S. The U.S. opened the scoring 2:32 into the second as Knight re-directed a Stack feed between the pads of Lacasse. With Jenner off for hooking, Alex Carpenter found Stack all alone in the slot; Stack beat Lacasse giving the Americans a 2-0 lead. The U.S. appeared to take a 3-0 lead at 16:05 of the second period when Knight knocked a loose puck out of mid-air past Lacasse; however, video review showed Knight knocked the puck down with a high stick and the goal was disallowed. Less than a minute later, the U.S. made it 3-0. With Canadian captain Hayley Wickenheiser off for holding, Megan Bozeks point shot beat a screened Lacasse from the point. Canada got on the board at 19:26 as Spooner beat Schaus on a partial break. Jenner got Canada to within one, putting home her own rebound after initially hitting the post. Canadian defenceman Tara Watchorn, who didnt play in Saturdays loss because of an unspecified injury, returned to action and was paired with Catherine Ward. Canada won the first two games of the six-game series, but won just once in the final four meetings with the Americans. Fake Vans For Sale . Cavaliers shooting guard Craig Ehlo makes a solid play on the ball, but still Jordan hits the amazing shot. CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert felt he made a big mistake when he fired Mike Brown as his coach in 2010. That didnt stop him from doing it again. Browns second shot with the Cavs ended Monday after one just one season as Gilbert dismissed the only Cleveland coach who has ever made it to the NBA finals. Brown had been re-hired last April by Gilbert, who regretted dismissing him four years earlier. While the Cavs record improved and they made strides defensively under Brown this season, the club missed the playoffs again and Gilbert decided it was time to make another change. "This is a very tough business," Gilbert said in a statement. "It pains all of us here that we needed to make the difficult decision of releasing Mike Brown. Mike worked hard over this last season to move our team in the right direction. Although, there was some progress from our finish over the few prior seasons, we believe we need to head in a different direction. We wish Mike and his family nothing but the best." In addition to firing Brown, Gilbert announced hes retaining David Griffin as the clubs full-time general manager. Griffin had been the interim GM since Feb. 6, when Gilbert fired Chris Grant one day after the Cavs lost to a Los Angeles Lakers team which finished the game with just five eligible players. Gilbert said Griffin would lead the search for Browns successor. Its not known what input Griffin had in Browns firing. Griffin has ties to former Phoenix executive Steve Kerr, who is one of New York president Phil Jacksons top choices to take over the Knicks. Griffin also has worked with Mike DAntoni and Alvin Gentry. Other coaches who could get consideration for the Cavs opening include Mark Jackson and George Karl. Brown had four years remaining on his $20 million contract. Brown, who was fired last year by the Lakers five games into his second season, could not be reached for comment. Brown went 272-138 in his first stint with Cleveland. Led by superstar LeBron James, the Cavs made the finals for the first time in 2007 and were title contenders throughout Browns tenure. However, they didnt advance past the Eastern Conference semifinals four years ago and Brown was let go. At the time, it appeared Gilbert was making the move -- and hiring Byron Scott as coach -- to appease James and hopefully keep him in Cleveland. James, though, decided to leave as a free agent for Miami, where he is chasing his straight third NBA title with the Heat. "Its just a tough business. I mean, thats all it is. Its a touggh business and, you know, Mike Brown got the short end of a tough business," James said.dddddddddddd Gilbert brought back Brown to fix Clevelands defence, and the Cavs improved, moving from last in the league in field-goal percentage to 12th. But the offence never flowed like it should and the Cavs didnt make a late playoff push despite a favourable schedule down the stretch. Clevelands players didnt care for Browns defence-first philosophy and there seemed to be a disconnect between the Cavs and the coaching staff. Brown seemed resigned to his fate following the season finale, when he said he would support whatever decision Gilbert made. "Its his team," Brown said. Cleveland went 17-16 under Griffin, who worked as Grants assistant before being promoted. Gilbert said he interviewed several other candidates before deciding to remove the "interim" from Griffins title. "We chose David as our GM because we believe he is the best person to lead our franchise at this critical time and into the future," Gilbert said. "David brings over two decades of experience. He knows the ins and outs of this league as well as anyone and is also an outstanding talent evaluator." The Cavaliers will hold a news conference on Tuesday at the teams facility in Independence. Gilbert had high praise for Griffin, who previously worked in Phoenixs front office before coming to Cleveland. "He is a general manager who is aligned with our culture and philosophy which is the foundation of how we do business," Gilbert said. "David is not only passionate about his own job but also cares deeply about the success of everyone around him. His presence alone creates an infectious positive environment with players, coaches, front office people and even our fan base. We already saw some progress in the short time David led our basketball side in the latter part of this past season. Clearly, we have substantial work ahead of us and I am confident that Griff will play an essential part of the growth and success of our organization." While the Cavs showed signs of progress with Brown, he was unable to get one of the leagues youngest teams to play consistently. His replacement will have a similar challenge, assuming Griffin doesnt do a complete overhaul to Clevelands roster. The Cavs are entering a critical summer. Theyll once again be in the draft lottery and the club is expected to be active in free agency. The team must also decide whether to offer Irving a maximum contract extension in July. ' ' '

In his first CFL Draft at the helm of his own football team, Winnipeg Blue Bombers general manager Kyle Walters solidified his offensive line, pulled the trigger on a trade to move back into the second round, and found some value with his late picks. And while taking highly-touted Simon Fraser offensive lineman Matthias Goossen second overall on Tuesday night will definitely help in an area of need for the club, it was a swap of draft picks that may prove to be his most shrewd move. "When Jesse Briggs started to fall a little bit, you could just see Kyle perk up in his chair. ‘We might have a chance here," said head coach Mike OShea of the Blue Bombers war room on Tuesday night. "And then (hes) working the phone and pulls the trigger and we move up to get a guy that we really value. I think that was a great move. It was fun to be sitting right there watching him work." Winnipeg entered the draft with no picks in the second round, having sent their original along with Alex Hall late last season to Saskatchewan to acquire offensive tackle Patrick Neufeld — a 25-year-old Canadian they hope to be a ratio-breaking starter on the offensive line. The Bombers called up a familiar trade partner Tuesday, Roughriders GM Brendan Taman, and exchanged their two third-round picks (20th and 26th overall) for Saskatchewans second-rounder, taking Briggs 17th overall to add some depth to the linebacker corps. "Jesse Briggs was a guy that we rated high. We were looking for some depth at linebacker. A special teams player. A phenomenal athlete," said Walters of the 6-foot-1, 222-pound McGill product. "And when we had an opportunity — youre in constant talk with all the other teams — if Briggs is here at this number heres what well do. And talking to a bunch of teams. And we were able to get him where we wanted to so we jumped at it." "Briggs, we expect to push. Losing James Green, Pierre Labbe, we needed that role as a special teams guy," added Walters. "Hes going to come in and be given every opportunity to compete and win that role as he pushes." "He played the SAM linebacker position in college so he is comfortable in space, but we view him in our system as a linebacker. An in-the-box guy thats going to be turned loose and run around." But the biggest acquisition made Tuesday is the man who the club hopes will soon start at centre. The 6-foot-4, 294-pound Goossen was one of two O-linemen who came to Winnipeg in the past month for private workouts and interviews. The other was Lavals Pierre Lavertu who went first-overall to Calgary. "I was really impressed by the way that the coaches came across, hearing about how things have changed there," said Goossen in his post-draft conference call. "Its really good to see the changes and I know that itll be a great year this upcoming year." Over the winter, Walters mentioned on a few occasions that the team needed and would land a starter with the No. 2 pick, but Tuesday the GM curtailed those statements slightly when speaking specifically of the 21-year-old lineman. "Im not going to put any undue pressure on him. Hes expecting himself to come in and start," said Walters. "Lets let him get to Winnipeg and lets let him get his feet under (him) before we start putting undue pressure on him." "Given his age, I mean he is a man," said OShea of Goossen. "You see how hes built. His film says that hes got a real good chance at (starting), but being as young as he is I just feel theres a little bit of a difference here. We dont want to stick him in and ruin him, sort of get him shell-shocked and ruin his confidence. "If camp shows us, and he shows us in camp what he believes hes going to show us and what we think he can do, and thats the logical step for us, then hell be in there. And if he needs a bit of time then were quite willing to give him that — afford him that time to develop a little bit. But hes going to be a good player for a long time in this league and its up to me now and the offensive line coach to make sure we dont put him in a position thats going to hurt his confidence." "Im just going to go to camp and try to work as hard as possible and just try to get better every day," added Goossen when asked about potentially starting in his rookie year. "If the coaches want to put me as a starter then that would be great, but right now Im just trying to get into camp and contribute to the team." Winnipeg added another Simon Fraser product in the fourth round in 6-foot-1 defensive back Derek Jones. Jones comes from some impressive bloodlines, as his father Ed won five Grey Cups with the Edmonton Eskimos in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Another intriguing prospect was taken in the sixth round with 305-pound defensive lineman Quinn Everett out of Mount Allison, who Walters says will be expected to learn the nose tackle position as well as along the O-line. The club drafted McMaster linebacker Aram Eisho with their final selection in the seventh round. Yeezy Sale . Orica, which was the overwhelming stage favourite, clocked a time of 24 minutes, 42 seconds along the 21.7-kilometre course, which was lined by more than 140,000 fans. The Australian team benefited from starting second and avoiding most of the rain that fell later. "What an amazing day, I never in my life would have imagined something like this," said Tuft, a native of Langley, B.C. "Im so proud of my team and I just cant thank them enough for that. They gave me the gift, it was really a birthday present. This team is really selfless that way. I feel really fortunate to be given that gift on my birthday." Omega Pharma-QuickStep finished second, five seconds behind Orica, beating third-place BMC by just two seconds. Cadel Evans looked strong for BMC and is one of the favourites after last years third-place finish. With defending champion Vincenzo Nibali not competing, Tour de France runner-up Nairo Quintana is another of the race favourites and his Movistar team finished eighth, 55 seconds behind Orica. One of his rivals, Joaquim Rodriguez, had a poor start as his Katusha team struggled throughout and only finished 19th. Rodriguez is 1 minute, 33 seconds behind Tuft and 38 seconds behind Quintana. While it has become a tradition for the first Giro stage to be held outside Italy, this iss the first time that the Grande Partenza — or the Big Start — took place outside mainland Europe.dddddddddddd Despite the wind and rain, it was a festive atmosphere in the Northern Irish city, with large crowds lining the route and cheering the riders on. However, Irish rider Dan Martin crashed after just 15 minutes, leaving him with a suspected broken collarbone. Martin caused the crash when he caught his wheel on a drain cover and went down strongly on his right arm, bringing down several of his Garmin-Sharp teammates. The four cyclists who were able to continue had to wait for teammate Fabian Wegmann — who had been dropped early on — to catch up with them, as rules stipulate a team has to finish with at least five riders for its time to count. Garmin eventually finished last, 3:26 behind Orica. That means Ryder Hesjedals chances of repeating his 2012 Giro success are all but over. "Obviously there was a crash, and there was only four of us that stayed ahead," said Victoria native Hesjedal. "It was right before a corner and you hear something had happened, we were already through the corner, looked back and there was nobody there. "Obviously it was pretty scary because you dont know what the hell is going on. I dont know what happened, it was basically a nightmare." Belfast is also the start and finish point for Saturdays 218-kilometre leg, which takes in picturesque rock formation, the Giants Causeway along its coastal route. The Giro ends in Trieste on June 1. England paceman Steven Finn needs to get a bit nasty in order to rediscover his bowling rhythm, according to Sky Sports pundit Sir Ian Botham. The tall Middlesex seamer has been struggling for form since returning prematurely from Englands victorious winter tour of South Africa with a side strain picked up in the series-clinching win in Johannesburg in January.Finn, who admitted to be striving for rhythm, has been down on his usual pace in the first two Tests of the summer, with the fast bowlers average speeds hovering around the 80mph mark. Finn celebrates taking the wicket of Sri Lanka opener Kaushal Silva for 60 And despite Englands three other seamers being among the wickets as the tourists were bundled out for just 101 in their first innings in Durham, Finn himself went wicketless through seven overs. However, the 27-year-old did finally managed to capture his first scalp of the Test on Sunday when Kaushal Silva tried to hook the paceman, only for the ball to loop up in the air to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.Earlier in that over, though, Finn had uncharacteristically chosen to exchange in a few words with the Sri Lankan opener in an apparent effort to gee himself up. Michael Holding said he looks like someone who is bowling within himself and setting his sights on bowling 25-30 overs in a day David Lloyd And Botham thinks the bowler should at times take a leaf out of team-mate James Andersons book by showing more aggression towards the batsman in an attempt to focus his mind. The problem that Steve Finn has is that he is actually just a nice guy and he needs to be a bit nasty and to get into their faces a bit more, the former England captain told Sky Sports after the days play.I think that he tried to do that, and he is right in that suddenly everything else goes out the window and all you are thinking about is that batsman. It is a way of focusing and I think that maybe he needs to do it a bit more.Maybe one of the other bowlers, like Jimmy Anderson, needs to have a quiet word with him and say: Come on, get into him. Get yourself going and fired up.In fact, Botham believes Finn - who returned match figures of 3-45 in Englands innings and 88-run win in the first Test in Leeds - could do worse than just trying to run in and bowl flat out as he looks to return to form. Finn was forced home early from Englands victorious winter tour of South Africa with a side problem Just sweep everything away, run in and try and bowl as quick as you can, he said. When you have four seamers, you can say to one guy: Finny, you are here to bowl a quick burst and I want wickets from you and you to bowl as quick as you can.Go out there and do not think about it too much. CHICAGO -- Patrick Sharp stepped up late to make sure the Chicago Blackhawks a win in their last regular-season home game. Sharp set up Marian Hossas tying goal in the final minute of regulation and then got the game-winner 43 seconds into overtime to lift the Blackhawks to a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night. Jeremy Morin also scored in the Blackhawks fourth straight win overall, and their first in overtime this season after seven losses despite leading in the NHL in goal scoring. "I think we were due," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "Were a pretty good club offensively, but to take this long to get one. ... Its certainly a relief, and a huge two points for us and a nice comeback as well." Defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago may need some of that late magic when the playoffs start next week. "Its not the type of overtime you see in the playoffs," Quenneville said, "but going forward, it gets the monkey off our back." Sharp scored the winner -- and his team-leading 34th goal -- on a shot from the slot that struck Montreal goalie Peter Budaj, rolled high off his equipment, ticked off the left post and landed in the net. "It was at the end of a shift," Sharp said. "I let go of the shot. Makes up for the ones that hit the post." Hossa had tipped in Sharps feed from the right corner left to tie the game at 2 with 47.7 seconds left in the third period. "Michel Handzus made a great pass to me and I just wanted to get it toward the net," Sharp said. "I saw Hoss stick and he put it in." The Blackhawks put on a strong, wild finish to win a cautiously played game between Original Six rivals with depleted lineups. "I dont think we were especially happy with the way we played the first couple periods, but picked it up there towards the end," Chicago defenceman Duncan Keith said. "Their goalie made some big saves, too." Corey Crawford finished with 28 saves for the Blackhawks. Dale Weise and Francis Bouillon scored for Montreal, which snapped a two-game win streak and lost for just the third time in its last 13 games. Budaj had 25 saves. The Canadiens were without starting goalie Carey Price and defencemen Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin, who didnt makee the trip to Chicago so they could rest for the playoffs.dddddddddddd Montreal will face Tampa Bay in the opening round, with home ice to be determines. "I thought we played a solid game," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. "On the last two goals, it was some bad coverage in front of the net. "Im sure on the last goal, the winning goal, Peter certainly would like to see that shot again, but those things happen. This is not an easy place to play, but our effort was there again." Chicagos played its fourth game without star forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. Both are expected to miss the remainder of the regular season, but return for the playoffs. Earlier on Wednesday, Kane said he will be at 100 per cent for the post-season despite a brace on his injured left knee. Kane, who was leading Chicago in scoring when he was hurt in a game against St. Louis on March 19, resumed skating on his own five days ago. On Wednesday, he skated with his teammates for the first time in the hours before the game against Montreal. Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk played only two shifts in the first period before suffering a lower-body injury and did not return. The Canadiens won the other game this season between the teams on Jan. 11 in Montreal. All the scoring came after the second period. Weise, who had sat out the last six games with an upper body injury, got the Canadiens on the scoreboard first, completing a 3-on-2 break after taking a feed from Josh Gorges at 7:31 of the third. Gorges was playing for the first time since March 5 after undergoing surgery on his left hand. Morin tied at 10:34 on a low shot from the right circle that slipped between Budajs pads. Bouillon put the Canadiens back ahead just 22 seconds later, as his high screened shot from the point slipped past Crawfords shoulder. NOTES: Canadiens D Mike Weaver played his 600th NHL game. ... It beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 last weekend in the Bundesliga and then eased past Roma 2-0 in the Champions League to make sure of advancing and topping its group. Its closest followers, Wolfsburg and Borussia Moenchengladbach, are four points behind. Wolfsburg hosts Hamburger SV, which is showing signs of revival, while Moenchengladbach visits next-to-last Dortmund, which has lost five straight. Here are some things to know ahead of the Bundesliga weekend.___BAYERN A DISASTER?At least in one area, Bayern coach Pep Guardiola thinks his team is a disaster — in creating goals from corners. In 10 matches so far in the Bundesliga, Bayern has not scored after a corner. We are a disaster and we have to improve there, the perfectionist coach said.Guardiola insists that his team is still not at its peak.We need to play better, we can never be satisfied, that would be a big mistake. We can always play better, Guardiola said after the victory over Roma. Not good news for Frankfurt.___WOLFSBURGS RISEEver since winning the title surprisingly in 2009, Wolfsburg has been trying unsuccessfully to establish itself as a Champions League team. It may be closing in on its goal this season. One of the reasons for its good run (six consecutive victories in all competitions), is the playmaker Kevin de Bruyne. The Belgium international tops the league with seven assists, and also has one goal.I am a winner, I am here to win every match, said de Bruyne, who failed to make an impact in Chelsea. No player can play a perfect game, but I try it every time.Coach Dieter Hecking says the Belgian is no world champion in training but is always eager to play.He is the one who can make the difference in a match, Hecking acknowledged.___CHANGING ROLESWhile Dortmund is battling to escape from the relegation zone, Moennchengladbach is playing some of the best football in the league.ddddddddddddMoenchengladbach gave Bayern a tough test in a 0-0 draw and is the only other undefeated team.Dortmund is hoping to take some of the momentum from the Champions League into the domestic competition. With four wins in four games, Dortmund has advanced in Europe. Dortmund led against Bayern last week before a couple of errors allowed Bayern to come back for a 2-1 victory.Moenchengladbach has a young, exciting team resembling The Foals of the 1970s, who dominated the league and won five titles.Christoph Kramer, Max Kruse, Andre Hahn and Patrick Herrmann are the stars of the team and its fast-paced attacking style, along with Raffael, a Brazilian playmaker.___TOP SCORER, BOTTOM CLUBFranco di Santo is one of the four players leading the Bundesliga with six goals apiece. That is remarkable seeing that his team, Werder Bremen, has only one victory and is last in the standings. He is a leader who is good for us, teammate Felix Kroos said of the Argentine. Di Santo is also popular because of his sunny disposition and positive attitude. Its important, especially in bad times, di Santo said of his good mood despite Bremens dire situation. Di Santo has settled in in his second season and also benefits from a change of formation since new coach Viktor Skripnik started playing with two forwards.___PADERBORN SURPRISEWith 15 points from 10 matches and seventh place, promoted Paderborn is arguably the biggest surprise of the season so far.The small club has the fifth best attack with 16 goals. But coach Andre Breitenreiter remains cautious. We only have 15 points. Thats only a good basis to avoid relegation, not more, said the coach, who is credited with Paderborns success because of his flexible tactics. But defender Patrick Ziegler thinks his team has more substanceAfter 10 matches, you cant talk about beginners luck any more. We are here to stay, he said optimistically.Paderborn travels to Augsburg, another small club that manages to stay in the league with limited means. ' ' '

Bill Foley is trying to bring an NHL expansion team to Las Vegas, and so far hes marching in step with Commissioner Gary Bettman.Im an ex-Army guy. I follow orders, Foley told The Canadian Press by phone over the weekend from his home in Northern California. Weve been very careful in our meetings with the NHL administrative staff, just trying to make sure that we do things in the proper fashion. Were not pushy, were not demanding. So far, the 70-year-old millionaire businessman has received permission to run a season-ticket drive and isnt pressing for anything more. The league and its owners — and two-thirds would have to approve a bid — have many questions about a possible venture into the Las Vegas market. Foley points to the citys growing business community.Nevada and Las Vegas in particular are no longer what they were 50 years ago or 40 years ago: a gambling city, kind of a weigh station in the desert, Foley said. A number of software companies, development companies have located in Las Vegas. ... Those companies and those people who work for those companies, thats our target. Those are the people that we want to have come to these games.Foley said that after two days of an initial website launch that 1,500 people had expressed interest in buying season tickets.I think what the ownership group is looking for, and ultimately what I think what would be important to the board, is that local people in Las Vegas are going to support this franchise, not just the local businesses, deputy commissioner Bill Daly said last week in Boca Raton, Florida. Because Im not sure its the same thing. In hockey circles, the prospect of a Las Vegas team adds a touch of glamor. Locally, the notion of finally attracting a team in one of North Americas major four sports leagues is enticing. To bring the NHL to Las Vegas, Foley could partner with the Las Vegas-based Maloof family, which previously owned the NBAs Sacramento Kings. Though he lives part-time in California and Whitefish, Montana, and has business ventures in Jacksonville, Florida, Foley and his associates seem well aware of the intricacies of the Las Vegas market. We feel like if we can demonstrate the strong local support for a team, that will go a long ways toward convincing the NHL or persuading the NHL that hockeys viable in Las Vegas, Foley said. Our mission is simply that.A 20,000-seat state-of-the-art arena is being built by AEG and MGM on the strip and is scheduled to open in the spring of 2016.Itll be as good as it gets in terms of hockey visibility, Foley said. The arena is being designed around not just concerts and fights and so on. Its being designed around hockey.Another front-runner for expansion, Seattle, doesnt have an arena for an NHL team. Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the New York Islanders are moving next season, has an awkward setup for hockey. Quebec City has the sparkling Quebecor Arena set to open this fall, but Bettman stresses that the building is no guarantee of an NHL team. Were just focused on Las Vegas, Foley said. The NHL teams owner said he sees no reason why this years lineup wouldnt have the capability to be one of the more competitive teams in the Eastern Conference. "I think you can pretty well predict what were going to have on the ice," Melnyk said Tuesday. "If everybody just plays to their potential I think its a great team and is going to be very competitive and will be a playoff team, but they just need to play to the level that we know that they can play." The Senators missed the playoffs last season and finished 11th in the Eastern Conference, but Melnyk is confident the Senators will finish in the top eight this year. "I think we have the potential to be in the playoffs and be competitive throughout the whole year," he said. "Once the playoffs start anything can happen. Thats the first step, lets get into the playoffs and let it run from there." There will be some significant changes to the Senators this year after the trade of Jason Spezza and the addition of David Legwand, Alex Chiasson and prospects Nicholas Paul and Alexander Guptill. Curtis Lazar, 19, will also be pushing to make the roster. "I think were going to be very, very competitive," said Melnyk. "Last year was not the kind of year we want to have this coming season. Eveeryone knows their roles and Im just hoping we stay away from injuries and were all set to go.dddddddddddd" Melnyk feels the Senators have a better schedule this season, adding he senses a renewed energy from players who are eager to put last season behind them. Ottawa dealt Spezza to the Dallas Stars last month. He was drafted by the Senators with the second overall pick in 2001 and had spent his career in the nations capital. The team has yet to name a new captain. Melnyk said he understood and accepted Spezzas request to be traded. "I spoke to him as far back as five years ago and he was already starting to talk about potentially moving and this time around he was looking for a change and I totally understand what he wanted to do," he said. Melnyk was in town to announce that the Senators and the Senators Foundation have surpassed the $100-million mark in community contributions and initiatives. "Were at the top, weve won the Stanley Cup in that area," he said of the teams charitable efforts. "I know what everybody else does, we talk about it, and they come here to see what weve done to get a sense of it. Theyre just in awe of the organization and how well we are organized. Its a machine." Melnyk capped off the afternoon with another charitable contribution as he and Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for ALS. CHICAGO -- Down 0-2 in the count in the 11th inning, Leury Garcia did something surprising: He bunted for a base hit. What happened next was even more unexpected. Garcia scored on a balk and a pair of wild pitches by Samuel Deduno, giving Chicago White Sox a 7-6 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Before a crowd of just 10,625, Chicago came back from a 6-4 deficit in the ninth on Garcias run-scoring single off Glen Perkins and Adam Eatons RBI grounder. Garcia said he made the call on his own to try and bunt even though the count was against him. "You have to work on it," Garcia said. "Ive been working and that was the perfect time to do it, and I do it. It was perfect." The speedy Garcia bunted up the third-base line on an 0-2 pitch leading off the 11th and took second when, with Eaton at the plate, Deduno (0-1) never came to a set position and balked. Eaton struck out, Deduno bounced an outside pitch that hit off Suzukis glove as Garcia advanced, and Marcus Semien took a called third strike. After an intentional walk to Jose Abreu, Deduno threw way outside on a 3-2 to pitch to Adam Dunn, and the ball hit off Suzukis glove as Garcia came home. Ronald Belisario (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 hitless innings for the win. "You get momentum from that," manager Robin Ventura said. "There are ways to hit a home run and win a game, and theres another way to manufacture it and come back. By coming back and then you win later, I dont know how many times we did that last year, not many. You end up doing something that feels new and feels fresh for these guys." Dunns solo homer in the eighth off Jared Burton pulled the White Sox to 6-5, but Kurt Suzuki hit a run-scoring double in the ninth against Daniel Wenn for a two-run cushion. The game was delayed during the top of the seventh after Eaton appeared to catch Oswaldo Arcias fly ball to centre and then dropped it when he went to grrab the ball from his glove.dddddddddddd The play was ruled a catch, but the Twins challenged the call and it was overturned by a replay umpire in New York. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the long delay forced him to pull starting pitcher Kevin Correia earlier than he wanted. "We were definitely going to challenge," Gardenhire said. "The length of it couldnt be helped from what I heard but it took too long for everybody involved." White Sox left-hander Felipe Paulino, back from elbow and shoulder surgery, made his first start since June 6, 2012, against Minnesota as a member of the Kansas City Royals. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Paulino laboured at times and threw 109 pitches. Twins starter Kevin Correia gave up three runs -- two earned -- and five hits in six innings with five strikeouts and a walked. It wasnt really a situation where I couldnt go back out there," Correia said. "It was 35 degrees, and I dont know how long that inning was taking already. But it pretty much came down to that review. Without that review, I definitely think Im going back out there." Trevor Plouffe had three RBIs for the Twins, who took a 5-3 lead with a three-run seventh. Alexei Ramirez had a two-run double for the Whiter Sox. NOTES: Twins reliever Casey Fien was diagnosed with a bruised left ankle when hit on a ball up the middle off Eatons bat ending the seventh inning. ... Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Winnipeg Jets had some weekend to wrap up a four-game road trip. In two wins, they scored just one goal. It came 20 seconds into Sundays 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks off the stick of Michael Frolik. Following Saturdays 1-0 shootout win over the Rangers in New York, the Jets scored on their first shift against the Blackhawks and Michael Hutchinson made 33 saves to earn his first career shutout in his sixth NHL game. He was awesome tonight, Frolik said of Hutchinson. The Jets went 3-0-1 on the trip, the only loss coming against New Jersey in a shootout on Thursday. They extended their points streak to five games (4-0-1), with the other two wins being decided by one goal. Corey Crawford was a hard-luck loser, making 26 saves for the Blackhawks, who fell to 2-5-0 in their last seven games after opening the season on a five- game point streak. Tough first shift, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. Crawford played for a second consecutive day after returning from a six-game absence because of a lower body injury to make 24 saves in Saturdays 3-2 loss in Toronto. The Blackhawks ripped off 47 shots against James Reimer and the Maple Leafs, including 26 in a scoreless third period that coach Joel Quenneville said might have been one of their best periods of the season. They had another good third period Sunday, firing 13 shots at the 24-year-old Hutchinson, who stopped each one to preserve Winnipegs second straight shutout following Ondrej Pavelecs 38-save effort on Saturday. They were the franchises first back-to-back shutouts since Kari Lehtonen posted two in a row for the Atlanta Thrashers on Oct. 7 and 9, 2006. An opening faceoff win led to instant pressure for the Jets that netted a shot by Andrew Ladd just seconds into the game. The Blackhawks couldnt clear the rebound after a long shot by Zach Bogosian and Frolik wheeled around to score from the left circle, giving Winnipeg the lead after 20 seconds. Hutchinson had nine saves in the first period and 11 in the second. Game Notes Each team went scoreless on two power-plays ... The Maple Leafs are in Montreal on Tuesday ... The Senators were rolling on a season-best three-game winning streak when Philadelphia visited them in Canadas capital city last Tuesday. The Flyers left Ottawa with a 5-0 rout, as Steve Mason stopped all 24 shots that were sent his way. Mason recorded his 20th career whitewash and first in a Flyers sweater. He distinguished himself as the second Philadelphia goaltender to record a shutout in Ottawa. John Vanbiesbrouck was the only other one to accomplish the feat with 36 saves in a 5-0 decision on Jan. 18, 1999. Jakub Voracek tallied twice to help the Flyers win for the third time in the last four meetings with Ottawa. Senators goaltender Craig Anderson yielded all five goals in the loss, falling to 7-4-1 with a 2.89 goals against average in his career against the Flyers. Phillys win in Ottawa last week marked the clubs second straight victory, but the Flyers had a three-game winning streak halted with Fridays 3-2 shootout loss in Winnipeg. The Flyers were denied their first four-game winning streak since last season despite taking a 2-1 edge over the Jets into the third period. Mason turned aside 3-of-5 attempts in the shootout, bbut was the hard-luck loser with 36 stops through regulation and OT.dddddddddddd "I think they believe they can win games," said Philadelphia head coach Craig Berube. "They play like it, but I still think we need to push more. We had the lead tonight in the third and we should have went and pushed more in the third period. Whether we sat back or whether were tired, I dont know. I just think we can be more aggressive." Scott Hartnell and Wayne Simmonds tallied for Philadelphia, which managed to come away with five points on a three-game road trip. The Senators rebounded from last weeks loss to the Flyers with a 4-2 win over Boston on Friday, but Ottawa then fell by a 4-1 score against Columbus in the finale of a four-game homestand on Sunday. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots to help the Blue Jackets subdue the Senators. Erik Karlsson scored late in Sundays game for the Senators, while Anderson gave up all four goals on 22 shots in the loss. "We had some chances but just couldnt find the back of the net," said Anderson. "We got one and started to get some pressure, but it was too late at that point." Ottawa is 4-3-2 as the road team this season, but the club has taken two of its last three games in Philadelphia. ' ' '

Toronto Star baseball columnist and TSN contributor Richard Griffin joins me for a half-hour of talk on manager John Gibbons strategy when it comes to his starting pitching and struggling bullpen, whether Brett Lawrie will see increased action at second base and Jose Bautistas great start to the season. Give it a listen here. GIBBONS LIKES HIS OFFENCE The Blue Jays entered Thursdays action with 166 runs scored in 34 games. Thats an average of almost 4.9 runs per game, good for fourth in the majors. Manager John Gibbons is in his seventh season, over two tenures skipping the Blue Jays. He believes this is the strongest offence hes had. "I would think this is probably the top," said Gibbons. "My last go around here we were really strong in the pitching department. We had some good offences but I dont think it equaled what we have here now. You need that in the American League. You need to be able to slug it out." Toronto boasts the league leader in on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) and walks. Hes Jose Bautista. Bautista and Colby Rasmus, with nine home runs each, are amongst the league leaders. Melky Cabreras 48 hits are the most in the sport this season. As a team, the Blue Jays rank second in home runs (44); second in slugging percentage (.432) and third in on-base plus slugging percentage (.761). ENCARNACION DISCUSSES FRANCISCO General manager Alex Anthopoulos has credited Edwin Encarnacion with helping to lure Juan Francisco to the Blue Jays. "Ive known Juan from a long time ago, he was playing with me in Cincinnati," said Encarnacion. "When he was young, I was older in here and hes one of my best friends. He had a couple of more (options) to go so I called him and asked him to come here because they can give him the opportunity to play here at this level.dddddddddddd" Francisco, 26, hit 18 home runs last season while playing with the Braves and Brewers but was cut by Milwaukee late in spring training. He signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays on April 2 and began the year at Triple-A Buffalo. His contract was selected on April 20 to replace Adam Lind, who went on the disabled list with a back injury. Aside from the opportunity the Blue Jays could afford him, Encarnacion was pressed Francisco to come to Toronto out of fear he would sign with another American League East team. The division, specifically the ballparks in the division, are friendly to power-hitting left-handed bats. "Thats why I dont want him to go to another team, like Tampa or another team," said Encarnacion. SANTOS STARTING FROM SCRATCH Sergio Santos pitched a scoreless eighth inning in Wednesdays 10-0 win over the Phillies. Thanks to the big lead it was a pressure-free inning. After two-straight outings featuring blown saves and three on the season, Santos is in the process of rebuilding his confidence. "It was nice to execute on the things that I wanted to do as far as locating my fastball, moving it in and out," said Santos. "It was nice. Its a nice first step, hopefully in the right direction." His stuff is good. Santos has struck out 18 hitters in 10 1/3 innings. The problem is hes walked nine and of the 12 hits hes allowed, three have been home runs. Santos expects more of himself. "Hopefully I can build off what happened (Wednesday) night and never look back again," he said. LAWRIE UPDATE Brett Lawrie took part in batting practice and fielded ground balls before Thursdays game. He left the fourth inning of Monday nights game in Philadelphia with lingering tightness in his right hamstring. Fridays game against the Angels may be more hopeful than reality. Lawries more likely to return on the weekend. ' ' '

MILAN, Italy -- Juventus eased to a 2-0 win at Livorno on Sunday to provisionally take over the top spot in Serie A, while Fiorentina fell to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Udinese. Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez scored in the second half for Juventus. The two time-defending champion moved two points above Roma, which hosts Cagliari on Monday. "I dedicate it to our fans who always support us," Llorente said. "We have to look at ourselves and continue doing everything the coach asks of us, as we are doing. I think we are a strong team." Tomas Heurtaux scored for Udinese, which had lost four of its past five matches. Inter Milan missed the chance to draw level with third-place Napoli as it hit the crossbar twice but drew 1-1 at relegation-threatened Bologna. Elsewhere, a stoppage-time equalizer saw Lazio snatch a 1-1 draw at 10-man Sampdoria and spoil coach Sinisa Mihajlovics first match in charge. "Its never nice to concede right at the end, but the wheels keep on turning," Mihajlovic said. "Im disappointed for the lads, they proved to themselves and others how you have to play when you wear the Sampdoria shirt." Sampdoria played the entire second half with 10 men after Nenad Krsticic was sent off. Also, teenage forward Domenico Berardi struck again as Sassuolo beat Atalanta 2-0 while Torino crushed Catania 4-1. Juventus faced something of a crisis in defence, with Stephan Lichtsteiner and Andrea Barzagli injured and Angelo Ogbonna and Leonardo Bonucci out suspended. Mauricio Isla, Sebastian Giovinco and Simone Pepe were also out with injury. The visitors broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark when Llorente volleyed Paul Pogbas cross into the top corner with a magnificent strike. Llorente turned provider in the 75th to set up Tevez for a low drive into the bottom corner. Andrea Coda almost scored an own goal to extend Juventus lead when his diving header hit the post from Simone Padoins cross. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was rarely troubled on his 500th Serie A appearance. Inter is eight points behind Juventus and two behind Napoli following the surprise draw. Bologna took the lead in the 12th minute following a swift counter attack. Jonathan Cristaldo raced down the right flank before rolling the ball across to Kone, who hadnt been picked up as he burst through the middle and sidefooted home. Former Bologna Saphir Taider could have been sent off as he was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card in the buildup to the goal for a shirt tug on Alessandro Diamanti. The referee had played the advantage. Inter came close to levelling on the stroke of halftime as Taider and Alvaro Pereira sent passes across goal but nobody was able to tap in. Moments later Fredy Guarins free kick was deflected onto the crossbar. It was back on level terms six minutes after the break when Jonathans shot was deflected into the bottom near corner. Bologna almost restored its lead five minutes later but Samir Handanovic pulled off a great save to deny Rolando Bianchi. Inter nearly snatched all three points in stoppage time when Juan Jesus volley crashed off the crossbar. Fiorentina is two points further back, in fifth spot, after losing at the Stadio Friuli despite dominating for much of the match. Udinese scored the only goal of the game against the run of play when Roberto Pereyra nodded on Antonio Di Natales free kick for Heurtaux to volley home at the far post in the 34th minute. Goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic kept Udinese in the lead while his counterpart Neto also made a number of saves. Udinese moved into the top half of the table and is a point behind eighth-placed Lazio. It was Mihajlovics first match in charge since taking over at Sampdoria after failing to guide Serbia to the World Cup. Mihajlovic played for both Lazio and Sampdoria. Sampdoria had lost its past three matches and its hopes of ending that run took a blow when Krsticic was shown a second yellow card at the start of the second half. However, it took the lead in the 67th minute. Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti did brilliantly to parry Manolo Gabbiadinis effort, before scrambling up to swat away another shot, but Roberto Soriano headed in the rebound. Lazio levelled at the end when Lorik Cana drilled into the bottom left corner. Catania is now a point behind Sampdoria and level with bottom club Chievo Verona after a hefty defeat in Turin. Sebastian Leto got Catania back into the game at the start of the second half following goals from Ciro Immobile and Omar El Kaddouri. But Emiliano Moretti and El Kaddouri sealed the match with two in as many minutes. Sassuolo moved three points above the relegation zone with goals from Simone Zaza and Berardi against fellow strugglers Atalanta. Fake Vapormax For Sale . "Two inches more down and maybe it is not a homer to left. Who knows?" Cincinnati led 3-0 after homers by Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier in the third and by Ryan Ludwick in the fourth. Arizona tied it with a three-run fourth, then in the fifth Chris Heiseys second home run of the season put the Reds on top for good. TORONTO -- All coach Randy Carlyle wanted his Toronto Maple Leafs to do was breathe. "Thats been our catchphrase now, because you cant do anything if you dont breathe," he said. Breathe despite seeing an eight-game losing streak all but ruin their playoff chances. Breathe despite blowing a two-goal, third-period lead to the Boston Bruins on Thursday night at Air Canada Centre. The Leafs did that, then got a chance to exhale with a 4-3 overtime victory that, if nothing else, keeps their hopes alive for another couple of days. "Were alive, but theres a lot of things that have to go our way," Carlyle said. "Make sure that we dont get too far ahead of ourselves. Weve only won two games here." Nazem Kadris goal 2:51 into overtime was just one of several pieces that must fall into place for the Leafs to rebound and make the playoffs as a wild card in the Eastern Conference. They likely need to also win all four of their remaining games, as they got no help Thursday night from the Columbus Blue Jackets, who beat the Philadelphia Flyers to remain one point ahead (85 to 84). The Blue Jackets also have two more games left to play, leaving the Leafs (38-32-8) to hope for help along the way. They could also have to lean on backup goaltender James Reimer, after starter Jonathan Bernier left Thursday nights game 7:22 into the third period with what Carlyle would only say was a lower-body injury. Bernier, who missed five games with a groin injury last month, was set for an MRI, according to Carlyle. In stopping 10 of the 11 shots he faced in relief throughout the remainder of the third and overtime, Reimer picked up his first victory since March 13. "Worried for Jonathans health, obviously. But its not worrisome with James coming in," winger Troy Bodie said. "Hes a good goalie, hes proven himself. He went in there and did a great job." Reimer had to do a great job because the Bruins (52-18-7) were pushing. They had already cut the Leafs lead -- which was built on goals by Paul Ranger, Tyler Bozak and James van Riemsdyk -- to one by the time Bernier was forced to leave. The play that led to Berniers injury even included a penalty on Ranger, who pushed Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron into the goaltender. Reimer came in and got the Leafs through the penalty kill before allowing the tying goal to Bergeron at the 12:51 mark of the third. "It showed some character to be able to come back against a desperate team like Toronto," said Bruins forward Milan Lucic, who scored Bostons second goal of the night 5:03 into the third. "These are the type of the situations you can find yourselves in in the playoffs." The Leafs can still dream and hope for the playoffs because Reimer stopped the next six shots he faced, holding on long enough to allow Kadri to eventually be the hero on the power play in overtime. "I tried to hold the boys in there and keep it close," Reimer said. "I had faith in the boys. They pulled it out, and obviously it was a good feeling." Any other feeling than the thrill of victory on Thursday night wouldve almost certainly ended the Leafs chances, especially given the Blue Jackets win in Philadelphia and their extra games left. Kadri said after the teams morning skate that he and his teammates were well aware of their spot in the standings, which is much further down than they were a few weeks ago. They also knew the Bruins were atop the Eastern Conference and the Atlantic Division and had all but clinched home ice throughout the first three rounds of the playoffs. In losing back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 26 and March 1, Boston mightve picked up a vital lesson after a month filled with so much winning. "Its adversity that were going to face in the playoffs," Bergeron said. "Weve got to make sure that we realize that." Lessons in losing are cheap for the Leafs with time running short. They have just four games left, beginning Saturday night against the Winnipeg Jets. Thats their home finale before travelling to face the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators to close out the season. Asked if he thought his Leafs would have to run the table to make the playoffs, Carlyle responded simply: "I just worry about the next one." That has been the mantra dating to Torontos losing streak, which ended Tuesday with a victory over the Calgary Flames. Now the Leafs are on a winning streak, their first since March 8 and 10. "Weve won two in a row now, so thats a starting point," Bozak said. "We have huge games coming up here to end the season. But that was a tough test for our team tonight, and we were able to come out on top." Just being able to come out on top against one of the NHLs top teams gave the Leafs a boost of confidence. But listen to players within the locker-room and there was never any of that missing. "We always have the confidence in our group no matter what happens and I think we have a good core group of leadership in here and guys that are all pulling the rope in the same direction," said van Riemsdyk, who hit the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career. "We stuck with it, even though things were tough, were going to have to continue to take it one game at a time, one shift at a time and go from there." NOTES -- Winger Joffrey Lupul was scratched with a lower-body injury and replaced in the lineup by Jerry DAmigo. Carlyle did not know for sure but called Lupul "doubtful" for Saturdays game against Winnipeg. ... First-liner Phil Kessel, who has been playing with a bruised right foot, had two assists for his first multi-point game since March 10. ... Bodie played 20:29, by far a career-high. Carlyle explained that was a product of wanting to create a checking line to open up van Riemsdyk, Bozak and Kessel for more favourable ice time. ... Former Flames captain Jarome Iginla returned to the Bruins lineup after missing the Bruins 3-2 loss to the Red Wings with what the team called a lower-body injury. ... Bruins forward Carl Soderberg returned to Boston for the birth of his child, which meant Jordan Caron played his second straight game. Michael Pineda Jersey . Bryce Harper? ST. LOUIS - Kenny Britt, Jared Cook and a group of St. Louis Rams pass-catchers made a statement before the game started. Then their teammates joined in for an entirely different kind of statement on the field.Five Rams players came out of the tunnel with their hands up in a demonstration related to the unrest in the St. Louis area after a grand jury decided not to indict a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed teenager in the suburb of Ferguson. In some ways, the silent gesture was louder than the teams dominant 52-0 victory on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.Everything about the situation touched me because it could have happened to any of us. Any of us are not far from the age of Michael Brown and it happened in our community, said Cook, referring to the teenager who was killed in August. We are part of this community. We are people of this community, so everything about it just touched me.I wouldnt want to be in any one of those guys situations that it happened to.A peaceful protest was held outside the Edward Jones Dome with the Rams (5-7) already firmly in control of the game. Rookie Tre Mason ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns — including an 89-yarder that made it 28-0 less than 19 minutes into the game — and added 47 yards receiving and another score on a 35-yard screen pass.He and Britt also did the hands-up gesture — a reference to the claim by some witnesses that Brown might have had his hands up when he was shot — after his touchdowns.I dont want the people in the community to feel like we turned a blind eye to it, said Britt, identified by teammates as the orchestrator of the demonstration. Let them know that were going to sit here and were going to support them. What would I like to see happen? Change in America.Stedman Bailey, one of four receivers who took part in the pregame demonstration along with tight end Cook, had a career-high 100 yards receiving. Shaun Hill threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, his first rushing TD since the 2008 season finale with San Francisco.Trumaine Johnson had two interceptions, returning the second one 43 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Raiders committed five turnovers — including two interceptions by Derek Carr and an interception and fumble by Matt Schaub, who replaced him in the fourth quarter. But most of the damage was done before then, with Oakland going three-and-out on its first three drives, and St. Louis capitalizing for touchdowns each time. Here is what else should be known about Sundays game:QUICK-START RAMS: The fast-starting Rams took their early dominance to another level. Already among the top NFL teams in first-quarter scoring margin with a 65-32 advantage, St. Louis scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and led 21-0 after the first quarter and 38-0 at halftime. The Rams have built double-digit, first-half leads in five straight home games. They squandered a 21-0 lead against Dallas and a 14-point edge against San Francisco before closing out victories against Seattle and Denver. The 38-point margin was the biggest halftime lead in Rams franchise history, surpassing the 44-7 cushion they had in a 51-21 victory against Green Bay on Sept. 21, 1980. That game represented the teams biggest first-half scoring output.RUSTY RAIDERS: Given three extra days to prepare after their only win this season, the Raiders couldnt carry over any momentum from their 24-20 win against Kansas City last Thursday night. The margin of defeat was the second-largest in franchise history. Only a 55-0 loss to the Houston Oilers on Sept. 9, 1961, was worse.I had my fair share of losses, but I guess my memory deleted all those other ones, like I hope it does this one defensive end Justin Tuck said. I cant think of anything of this magnitude.Raiders coach Tony Sparano said he didnt see the blowout coming, and he wants his players to remember both the feeling after last weeks victory and what it felt like to lose so badly. This hurts. This is bad, said Carr, who was 24 for 39 for 173 yards. This is a bad feeling, but we know its really tough right now. Are we going to turn on each other? Are we going to hold hands? Obviously, were going to stick together and see what happens. The Raiders had only given up 50 or more points in five other games, including one each of the past two seasons. It was their first shutout loss since a 28-0 whitewash against Kansas City on Oct. 23, 2011.We got hit in the mouth and didnt punch back, receiver James Jones said.OUT TOO LONG: Defensive end Chris Long returned to the Rams lineup after missing 10 games with an ankle injury sustained in the season opener. He logged two tackles, a fumble recovery, and his first sack of the season. He also pressured Carr on the first drive of the game when he started out standing up in the middle of the line instead of his usual spot at defensive end.It felt really good, Long said. Its tough. You prepare for the season and then youve got to watch your buddies out there going through good and bad. I just was really happy to be a part of it.With Long back, St. Louis notched its first shutout since Dec. 17, 2006, also against the Raiders.NO PROTECTION: Despite their nearly across-the-board struggles this season, Oakland had generally been solid at protecting its quarterbacks. The Raiders had allowed only 13 sacks through their first 11 games, with only Denver (12) giving up fewer. The Rams bucked the trend by sacking Carr and Schaub six times. Robert Quinn, who led the NFC in sacks last season before a slow start to 2014, got to Schaub twice in the fourth quarter and knocked the ball out twice. When youre able to rush with one of the best in the business, its a lot of fun coming to work every day, said Long, who pounced on Schaubs first fumble. The Raiders Kevin Boothe was able to cover the second one to allow Oakland the chance to punt.QUICK HITS: In a game featuring two teams rumoured to be considering a move back to Los Angeles, fans behind the north end zone held up white letters spelling out KEEP THE RAMS IN ST. LOUIS. It could be seen on television during extra-point attempts in the second quarter. ... The Rams biggest shutout was a 59-0 victory against Atlanta on Dec. 4, 1976. ... Masons touchdown reception was the first of his career. ... The Raiders lost right tackle Menelik Watson to a left ankle injury in the second quarter. Tight end Brian Leonhardt was evaluated for a possible concussion sustained in the first quarter. St. Louis guard Rodger Saffold, who signed with Oakland in the off-season before having his contract voided because of concerns about a shoulder injury, hurt his left shoulder in the second half. He has started every game this season.___AP NFL websites: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL Air Max 720 Outlet . - After three days of light, make that very light, workouts, Team Irvin and Team Carter are ready for tonights Pro Bowl. Two more places were up for grabs in the late kickoffs, with Dynamo Kyiv needing at least a draw against Rapid Vienna to progress from Group G. PSV is a former European champion and winner of the UEFA Cup -- the pre-cursor to the Europa League -- but has fallen on hard times and is languishing in 10th place in the Netherlands Eredivisie after Saturdays 6-2 humbling by Vitesse Arnhem.
