in Washington on Wednesday before returning Antworten

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Flyers are hoping to end a scoring drought and return to the win column when they visit the struggling Buffalo Sabres for Saturdays battle at First Niagara Center. The Flyers tied a season high for goals in Mondays surprising 7-3 rout of the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning, but Philadelphia was shut out in its next two outings. Craig Berubes club dropped a 1-0 road decision in Washington on Wednesday before returning home to lose 4-0 to Vancouver on the following night. Philadelphia enters Saturday with a scoring drought of 144 minutes, 59 seconds after the consecutive shutout defeats. The Flyers were blanked in two straight games last April against St. Louis and Columbus, but this marks the first time the club was shut out in back-to-back games in regulation since Nov. 28-Dec. 3, 2009 (1-0 at ATL and 3-0 vs. VAN). Ryan Miller stopped all 30 shots sent his way on Thursday, while Vancouver rode an early burst of offense to the easy win in the City of Brotherly Love. Starter Ray Emery was pulled early in the second period after giving up three goals on 12 shots. Rob Zepp finished the contest by allowing one goal on 10 shots. Zepp was beaten on a breakaway just 22 seconds after entering the game before stopping nine straight shots. Berube felt his team quit after allowing Vancouver to grab the lead on Nick Boninos goal just 6:35 into the game. You know the thing that bothers me about it all is that it is only 1-0. There is a lot of hockey left, you know play and compete and work, Berube said. That is the one thing that you can control, how hard you compete and you know we stopped doing that. The Flyers played without Scott Laughton on Friday, as the rookie centerman sat out with an upper-body injury. Laughton is questionable for tonight. Philadelphia, which is 13 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, only has three wins in its last 11 trips to the ice, going 3-7-1 during that stretch. The Flyers are just 6-14-4 on the road this season and hope to halt a six-game slide as the guest. Philadelphia hasnt earned a road victory since Dec. 23 in Minnesota, but the Orange and Black have claimed eight wins over their last 12 trips to Buffalo. Philly also has taken three in a row and eight of the last 10 games in this series and tonight the Flyers face a Sabres team on a nine-game losing streak. Buffalo has failed to pick up a single point in three weeks, going 0-9-0 since earning a shootout win over the visiting New York Islanders on Dec. 27. The Sabres, who are last in the East standings, are just 1-12-1 over their last 14 games. On Thursday, the Sabres faced a Minnesota team which had lost six in a row but the Wild were able to get off the schneid with a resounding 7-0 win in Buffalo. The Sabres sent just 18 shots at Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk, who notched a shutout in his Minnesota debut after coming over from Arizona in a trade on Wednesday. Jhonas Enroth was responsible for all seven goals on 37 shots for Buffalo. Theres no excuse for it, said Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges. Theres no way that this should happen. It was the fourth straight home loss for Buffalo, which fell to 10-12-2 this season in Western New York. The Sabres complete a three-game homestand tonight before beginning a five-game road trip tomorrow in Detroit. Pittsburgh Penguins Store . Custom Pittsburgh Penguins Jerseys . - Even with a new coach, the Denver Nuggets still love to push the basketball.Perhaps already annoyed by the attention to his left elbow ahead of the Super Bowl, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman used a quip to answer one reporters question about that joints range of motion. If I had to slap my brother, Sherman replied, Id be able to do it.Seattles other All-Pro defensive back, safety Earl Thomas, is dealing with a bum shoulder and not only missed practices but also avoided the media, which is one way to avoid the question that so often becomes a big part of the buildup to the big game: How hurt are you?Ever since Sherman was injured in the NFC championship game, he has maintained he expects to play against the New England Patriots on Feb. 1. Hes been practicing and called the elbow a little sore, but not too bad.Thomas status is less certain.Whenever either is near a microphone or notepad over the next week, updates will be sought. While the NFLs investigation of the underinflated footballs used by the Patriots in the AFC championship game has been getting a ton of attention, there will be room for other topics. Fans of both teams want to know about injuries, as does anyone planning to place a wager on Super Sundays outcome.Over the years, key injuries to key players — including a couple of guys still with the Patriots — have been breathlessly charted in the days before kickoff.Heres a look at some famous examples, including a few involving Super Bowl MVPs:ROB GRONKOWSKI, PATRIOTS, 2012: After catching 17 touchdown passes, a record for a tight end, he sprained his left ankle in the AFC title game. The appetite for information was not helped by New England coach Bill Belichicks general reluctance to provide details on injuries. A Buffalo TV station cited Gronkowskis father as saying Rob would be fine. The only reason its getting so blown up is because its the Super Bowl, Gronk said at Media Day. THE GAME: He had only two catches for 26 yards in New Englands 21-17 loss to the New York Giants; a desperation heave on the final play fell just out of a lunging Gronkowskis reach.TOM BRADY, PATRIOTS, 2002: In his first season as an NFL starting quarterback, Brady sprained his left ankle in the AFC cchampionship game.dddddddddddd It wasnt until the Wednesday before the Super Bowl that Belichick announced the youngster would start over Drew Bledsoe. Belichick even went so far as to ask a pool reporter not to identify who took the most snaps at QB in practice. THE GAME: Brady was voted MVP. He went 16 for 27 for just 145 yards but didnt throw an interception and led the drive to the winning field goal in New Englands 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams.EMMITT SMITH, COWBOYS, 1994: The leagues career leading rusher separated his right shoulder in the last game of the regular season; he wound up having off-season surgery. After the NFC title game, Smith was asked about his shoulder, and he joked that Dallas coach Jimmy Johnson said its healed, so I guess its healed. THE GAME: Smith was voted MVP. He ran for 132 yards and two second-half touchdowns in the Cowboys 30-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills.JERRY RICE, 49ERS, 1989: The man with by far the most yards receiving in NFL history sprained his right ankle during practice the Monday before the Super Bowl. After he showed up for interviews the next day with that ankle taped, folks starting discussion whether someone such as Mike Wilson would be able to fill in capably. THE GAME: Rice was voted MVP. He had 11 catches for 215 yards and one TD, and had three grabs for 51 yards on the winning drive in a 20-16 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.DON MAYNARD, JETS, 1969: Maynard — like Smith and Rice, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame — injured his hamstring in the AFL championship game. But it was, of course, a different era, without Twitter and 24-hour TV channels. According to lore, the Jets Super Bowl opponent didnt even know Maynard was hurt. THE GAME: Maynard was used as a decoy and wound up with zero catches, but Joe Namath and the Jets beat the NFLs Baltimore Colts 16-7.___AP Pro Football Writer Barry Wilner and AP Sports Writers Tim Booth and Jimmy Golen contributed to this report.___Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
